So several weeks ago, I just finished a book by an Indonesian author, Andrea Hirata, I like his book a lot, his stories describe the life of average people, and on many occasions, the life of those who are considered “unfortunate” by today’s standard. His background stories often depict Malay people who live in the islands of Bangka Belitung, their fondness of talking with friends in the ‘warung kopi’ ( coffee shops), injustice that happens daily in the grassroots level community, their strength in facing their problems with humour and ‘laisse faire’ attitude etc… did I tell you I really like his book? I did yes… And why do I wait so long to write about this book? Well… Life brings so much, my hands are full!
These stories, we can’t find it on Instagram, on Facebook or other social media platform, because it’s not the part of life that we are willing to share with others. We love to share the successes, the beautiful vacation photos – traveling is the new shiny symbol of status, and it’s really easy to find posts that are in actuality the humble brag at its finest.
I often find a post that states more or less as follows: POV : the best thing about being me is: bla bla bla … I could do this… I could do that, I think my way of life should be practiced everywhere; POV: my Sunday’s life, on Sundays she’s exercising yoga, eating healthy oatmeal breakfast, walking the dog, taking a first nap, going for a run, having another healthy home cook lunch, having another walk with the dog, taking another nap, not once I see her doing her laundry, washing her dishes, mop the floor, folded her clothes, dusting her furniture… Yet her house is just as good as those in magazines.
Cheers my dearest readers, may you too be content with everything you have right now.
